Getting Candidate Referrals for Job Openings

Brian Tracy offers this advice to help you select the right people for your organization. According to Tracy, one of the top business speakers and authorities in the world, when someone calls to refer a candidate for an opening explain to him the position you need to fill. Ask how well he thinks that the candidate he's proposing might perform in this job. Speak as little as possible and listen carefully.

Ask the following questions:

1. "Would you hire this person back again today?" Legally, people can answer this question honestly and directly without any fear of being sued. If they say that they would not hire the candidate back, you should ask, “May I ask why not?” You may or may not get an answer but always ask.

2. “Is there anything else I should know about this person?” Ask this question just before you hang up. Sometimes, the answer to this question will give you vital information that will allow you to make a much better hiring decision.
