President George W. Bush Nominates Former AMA President and CEO Barbara Barrett to Serve as Secretary of the Air Force

NEW YORK, July 25, 2003—President George W. Bush has nominated Barbara McConnell Barrett of Arizona to be Secretary of the Air Force. Previously, Ms. Barrett served as President and CEO of the American Management Association and was a teaching Fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.

Ms. Barrett served as President and CEO of AMA in 1997 and 1998 and was on the AMA Board of Trustees for nine years. She currently is a member of AMA’s International Council.

She was a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS), an advisory group to then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney and then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell. Earlier in her career she served as a partner for Evans, Kitchel & Jenckes, a Phoenix based law firm.

Ms. Barrett’s previous presidential appointments include Chairman of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, Deputy Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration and Vice Chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board. She earned her bachelor’s degree, her master's degree and her J.D. from Arizona State University.
