AMA will provide up to 25 scholarships for local high
school students in Saranac Lake, N.Y., and other select
schools in the region to attend its prestigious summer program.
NEW YORK, April 28, 2005—High school students
from Saranac Lake and from other selected schools in New
York’s Adirondack region are invited to apply for
full scholarships to attend Operation Enterprise, American
Management Association’s (AMA) summer leadership training
and career development program for young adults. This intensive,
eight-day residential program teaches students about management,
negotiation, conflict resolution, strategic planning and
ethics, as well as helping them improve their leadership,
communication and presentation skills.
AMA has been offering this prestigious program since 1963
but this is the first time it will be held in the region.
It will take place from June 25 to July 2, 2005, at Paul
Smith’s College, located in Paul Smiths, New York.
Twenty-five scholarships will be provided to local students
from high schools in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake,
Malone, Saranac and St. Regis Falls.
The application deadline for this program is May 25, 2005.
To apply, students must submit a current academic transcript,
one letter of recommendation, a list of community and campus
activities and accomplishments, a 500-word essay and a résumé
to Operation Enterprise, American Management Association,
1601 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. Scholarships for this
program will cover the cost of tuition, room, board, materials
and local sightseeing. For more information, contact Deborah
Trim, Director of HR for AMA in Saranac Lake, at 1.800.854.4493,

“American Management Association has been a proud
employer in Saranac Lake since 1957,” said Edward
T. Reilly, president and CEO of American Management Association.
“This program is one component of AMA’s global
outreach initiative designed to bring the advantages of
our proven management education and professional development
to younger people. We are delighted to be offering Operation
Enterprise locally and supporting students in the greater
Saranac Lake community,” Reilly said.
At Operation Enterprise, students experience firsthand the
value of teamwork, cooperation and diversity in the workplace.
This program encourages learning through involvement. Student
teams prepare and present a business case before a mock
board of directors, engage in a one-day work simulation
and interact with corporate mentors. Senior executives,
managers and consultants from a variety of businesses and
industries volunteer their time as guest faculty and pass
on their knowledge and experience to the next generation
of business leaders. Since 1963, more than 12,000 high school
and college students have participated in this program.
The American Council on Education has recommended that colleges
and universities award three semester hours of credit to
those who successfully complete the Operation Enterprise
program.
In addition to the special program being held at Paul Smith’s
College, the 2005 high school programs, for students ages
16–18, will be held at UCLA, Los Angeles, July 8–15;
George Washington University, Washington, D.C., July 18–25,
Columbia University, New York City, July 24–31. AMA’s
2005 college program will be held at Columbia University,
June 8–15.
Full and partial scholarships for these programs are available
based upon applicant qualifications and on the availability
of funds. Operation Enterprise depends upon the support
of dedicated corporate and individual sponsors for scholarships,
services and speakers.
AMA’s Saranac Lake facility, located on the site of
the former Trudeau Sanatorium, serves as an operations hub
of the association’s global activities. Employing
nearly 200 North Country residents, AMA Saranac Lake provides
telemarketing, customer service, accounting, audit, software
development, computer operations, product distribution and
shipping in support of all operating divisions. Many of
the original buildings currently in use on the 65-acre campus
have been maintained in order to preserve their original
Adirondack architectural charm. Operating as a virtual self-contained
village, the complex has its own power and communication
distribution systems as well as a network of roads that
are maintained year round. In addition to being a vital
link to the worldwide business community, the Saranac Lake
facility contributes more than $6 million a year to the
region’s economy.
