Important Issues for Managers of Mentoring Clients:
A 90-minute Briefing for People Who Supervise Others Being Mentored
Seminar # 67706
Overview
One of the key elements of a formal mentoring program is that managers do not mentor their direct reports. It can cause resentment and jealousy on the part of other employees. For this reason, mentoring clients are best matched with mentors outside of the reporting relationship. However, the manager does play a critical role in the success client/mentor relationship.
Product Description
One of the unique program features is this 90-minute briefing for the managers whose employees are being mentored. It explains the program and underscores their supportive role in the mentoring process.
Who Should Attend
Managers and supervisors whose direct reports will be in the mentoring program will find this informative. For maximum benefit, we recommend 10-20 participants.
Benefits
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain the tools to:
- Understand how to support the mentoring relationship without “invading” it
- Recognize and overcome “friction points” the mentoring relationship could present to the direct reporting relationship
- Gain visibility and exposure as mentoring relationship supporters
- Gain networking opportunities with other mentoring program participants
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
-
Appreciate how mentoring fits into the organization’s performance goals and its learning and development plans (i.e., understand the answer to the question: why are we doing mentoring?)
-
Identify and overcome potential "friction points" that the mentoring relationship could present to the direct reporting relationship.
-
Support, without invading, the relationship mentoring clients have with their mentors
Instructional Methods
