Liza Siegel, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist with a private practice, and a consulting psychologist for several reality television shows, including Survivor and The Apprentice. In over fifteen seasons of working in the medium, she has not only been involved with the screening, testing, and interviewing of applicants, but has also been the person contestants turn to after they’ve been cast-out or fired. In the process, she has come to appreciate the powerful connection between leadership and positive personality traitsin her own life as well as in the business ambitions of The Apprentice contenders.
Dr. Siegel first learned the importance of hope and the belief that anything is possible as an undergraduate at Northern Kentucky University. She attended college full-time as a single parent while working several part-time jobs and caring for her young daughter, Penni. Upon graduating with honors, she applied to the U.S. Air Force Officer Training School and served as a Captain during the Gulf War. As an executive in the administrative branch of the military, she closely observed and studied the qualities of effective leadership. After completing her tour of duty, she went on to earn her Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology.
As a consultant for The Apprentice, Dr. Siegel has been continually struck by the impact that optimism and a positive outlook have on professional achievement and personal satisfaction. Reinforced by her experiences with the show, her fascination with positive emotions inspired her to write a book for aspiring business leaders, SUITE SUCCESS: The Psychologist from The Apprentice Reveals What It Really Takes to Excelin the Boardroom and in Life (AMACOM Books).
You can learn a lot from extreme examples, as on The Apprentice, Dr. Siegel reflects. What the applicants have shown me is that there is a way to be determinedly upbeat even when all the signs indicate otherwise.
Dr. Siegel has taught psychology courses at a number of universities, including Antioch Graduate School in Santa Barbara. In addition to her teaching, private practice, and consulting, she has made contributions to the field of forensic psychology. She published a paper on offenders with stalking behavior in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, served as a forensic fellow at the San Diego County Jail, and received an award from Forensis for her research.
When she’s not on location in Manhattan or some remote island counseling reality show contestants, Liza Siegel lives with her husband in Berkeley, California.
